Deshedding Treatment in North Bay
We remove the loose undercoat before it ends up on your couch, clothes, and car.
Why your pet needs deshedding
If you're finding tumbleweeds of fur in every corner, your dog or cat is shedding their undercoat. It's normal. But it doesn't have to take over your house. A deshedding treatment pulls out the dead hair that's already loose, so it doesn't end up everywhere you sit. We use the right tools for your pet's coat type - double-coated breeds like Huskies and Golden Retrievers get the most dramatic results, but short-haired pets shed too.
Regular brushing at home helps, but it doesn't reach the dense undercoat the way our process does. We work through the coat in layers, removing what's ready to come out without damaging the topcoat. You'll see the difference when you get home. Less hair on the furniture. Less sneezing if anyone in the house has allergies. And your pet feels lighter and cooler, especially heading into summer.
We serve North Bay and nearby areas like Callander and West Ferris. Book a deshedding session before the heavy shedding season hits, or anytime you're tired of lint-rolling your life.
What happens during the appointment
We start with a warm bath using a deshedding shampoo that loosens dead hair at the follicle. While your pet is still wet, we do a first pass with an undercoat rake or deshedding tool. You'd be surprised how much comes out at this stage. Then we blow-dry with a high-velocity dryer - the airflow pushes out even more loose fur. It's like a mini windstorm, and most dogs tolerate it just fine.
After drying, we go over the coat again with the deshedding tool, working section by section. We pay extra attention to the chest, hindquarters, and tail - the spots where undercoat tends to mat if it isn't pulled out. If your pet also needs a Nail Trimming or a full Dog Grooming session, we can combine services in one visit. The whole deshedding process takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on size and coat density.
How often should you book it
Most double-coated breeds benefit from deshedding every 4 to 8 weeks during spring and fall, when they blow their coat. If your pet sheds year-round - looking at you, Labradors - you might want to come in every 6 weeks. Single-coated or short-haired pets can go longer, maybe every 8 to 12 weeks, or just book it when you notice the shedding ramp up.
We'll give you an honest recommendation after we see your pet's coat. Some owners pair deshedding with Breed Specific Grooming to keep everything tidy at once. Others just want the undercoat stripped out and handle the rest at home. Either way works. The goal is less fur on your floors and more time enjoying your pet instead of cleaning up after them.
What it costs and how to book
Deshedding runs $60 to $100 depending on your pet's size and how much coat they're carrying. A Corgi costs less than a Malamute. If we're adding it to a full groom, we usually discount the deshedding add-on. We'll quote you a price when you call or book online - no surprises when you pick up your pet.
You can book through our website or give us a call. We're in North Bay and we also work with clients from Sturgeon Falls and the surrounding area. If your Cat Grooming client is a heavy shedder, we do deshedding for cats too - it just takes a gentler touch and a patient groomer. Bring your pet in and we'll send them home looking (and feeling) a whole lot lighter.

Frequently asked questions
Will deshedding hurt my dog or cat?
No. We're only removing hair that's already loose and ready to fall out. The tools we use don't cut or pull live hair. Some pets find the high-velocity dryer loud, but it doesn't hurt - it just blows out the undercoat. Most animals relax once they realize what's happening. If your pet is anxious, let us know and we'll take extra time to keep them comfortable.
How much hair will actually come out?
Enough to fill a grocery bag, sometimes more. It's shocking the first time you see it. Double-coated breeds like Huskies, Shepherds, and Retrievers produce the most dramatic piles of fluff. Even short-haired dogs surprise people - you don't realize how much loose hair they're carrying until it's all in one spot. The good news is that's hair that won't end up on your couch.
Can I just brush my pet at home instead?
You can, and regular brushing helps between appointments. But a slicker brush or regular comb doesn't reach the dense undercoat the way our deshedding tools and high-velocity dryer do. Think of it like vacuuming versus deep-cleaning your carpets - one maintains, the other resets. If shedding is driving you crazy, a professional deshedding treatment makes a bigger difference than home brushing alone.
